Play4What? (“we”, “us”) runs a challenge platform where players put club-fulfilled prizes on the line in their own matches. This policy explains what personal information we collect, why, who sees it, and the rights you have under South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). It applies to our website, the Play4What? apps, and communications we send you. Questions or requests: hello@play4what.co.za.
Account details — your name, email address, and date of birth (we use age to keep the platform 18+ where prizes require it), plus an optional phone number and profile photo if you add them.
Match and challenge activity — your court or tee bookings as shared by your club's booking system (for example Playtomic), the challenges you send and accept, scores, results, win/loss records, vouchers you win, and the friends you connect with on the platform.
Payment information — when you take part in a staked challenge, your card is captured and stored as a secure token by our payment provider. We never see, store, or process your full card number ourselves; we hold only a reference (such as the card brand and last four digits) so you can recognise your saved card. You pay your stake via our payment provider's secure page in the window before a staked match starts; if your side wins, or the match is drawn, called off or no result is recorded, the full amount is refunded to your card immediately — only the losing side's stake is kept.
Technical data — sign-in cookies, your theme preference, and basic device information needed to keep your session secure. When our mobile apps launch, a push notification token for your device if you allow notifications.
To run your challenges end to end: matching you to your bookings, notifying the people in your match, settling results, issuing prize vouchers, and letting the club or vendor redeem them at the counter. To send you service notifications — in the app and by email — about challenges, scores, wins, and expiring prizes (you can switch email off in Settings; service messages inside the app stay on so you never miss a deadline that affects your money). To keep the platform safe: preventing fraud, enforcing the participant-only rule, and meeting our legal and accounting obligations.
Marketing is separate. Personalised offers only happen if you opt in, and you can withdraw that opt-in at any time in Settings.
Your club and its prize vendors — the minimum needed to run the game: your name and match activity appear on club leaderboards and screens (you can switch this off with “Show my record” in Settings), and when you redeem a voucher the club or vendor sees what is needed to hand over the prize.
Service providers — our payment processor (card tokens, holds, and charges), our email delivery provider (to send the notifications described above), and our hosting and database providers, each bound to use your data only to provide their service to us.
We do not sell your personal information, we do not share it with advertisers, and we will only disclose it beyond the above if the law requires it.
Your profile and activity are kept while your account is active. If you close your account we delete or de-identify your personal information, except records we must keep by law — for example financial records of settled challenges and redeemed vouchers, which are retained for the statutory period and then removed.
Under POPIA you may ask us at any time what personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it, or object to processing. Email hello@play4what.co.za and we will respond within a reasonable time. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator (South Africa) at inforegulator.org.za.
Play4What? is for adults. You must be 18 or older to register, and prizes involving alcohol are always served at the outlet's discretion under their own licence.
Your data lives in access-controlled databases; card details live only with our payment provider as tokens; and connections to Play4What? are encrypted in transit. No system is perfect, but if a breach ever affects your personal information we will notify you and the Information Regulator as POPIA requires.
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will tell you in the app or by email before the change takes effect. The date at the top always shows the current version.
This policy is a working draft and will be finalised following formal legal review.
